With farming comes stories, which turn into memories. The Des Moines Register put together 100 photos of farming from the 1930's, which are simply amazing. If you live on a farm, I challenge you on this Sunday that you ask people older than you to share about farming in the past. If you don't, ask people who may have been familiar with agriculture. Even better, pictures are worth a million words. Find old photo books and see what you can learn from them. More pictures from my family farm will be shared soon, but click here for the Des Moines Register link and look below for a preview of my families history books.

You're bacon my heart when you don't order tickets to the Iowa State Bacon Expo on November 8th in Ames, Iowa.
Being the only student ran bacon festivle in the county, this year’s family-themed event will feature industry representatives and local vendors, serving novelty bacon items and hundreds of pounds of bacon. Bacon Expo unique in the fact that it is focused on education, which is my job as Education Chair. The goal is to provide an alcohol-free, fun atmosphere for bacon enthusiasts, while showcasing student organizations and educational opportunities in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State. Click here to get to the website. See you Saturday, November 8th in Ames! As we celebrate 4-H week, I can't help but think where 4-H has taken me, particularly across the country. I began my journey through 4-H at the age of 6, when I joined Clover Kids. In 3rd grade, I started attending 4-H meetings and had the opportunity to join a 4-H club from the very beginning. In 7th grade, I was leading the meetings, and in 12th grade I was leading the County Council meetings with peers in my local community. This timeline proves that 4-H gave me the opportunity to gain leadership positions at a very young age. 4-H also taught me how to set goals, work hard, manage time, talk with people, public speak, and other important life skills. A few of my best memories are not only with my friends from my hometown, but from around the state and around the world.
The agricutlure industry is always working on feeding the world and giving back to their communities.
One in five children in the United States are food insecure, according to nokidhungry.com. With September being National Hunger Action month, the largest club on Iowa State University’s campus decided to take action. When times get tough, the agriculture industry comes together. The support your "show family" gives is nothing short of amazing. They'll help you, pray for you, and encourage you. When someone needs help in the field, all the farmers around them stop what they're doing and gather to make sure the person in need is taken care of. This proves why American agriculture is the backbone of America. I heard tonight at a book reading by a world renowned novelist Jane Smiley said, "Iowa is where farming is." Mrs. Smiley has writen many thousand of pages about Iowa farms, and was very complimentary of farming. Everyday I thank The Lord for making me a part of such an amazing industry.
Harvest makes you appreciate a farmer. Day 4 for why agriculture is amazing, it's the farmers and ranchers that work long hours feeding the world. This fall thousands of farmers will spend hundreds of thousands of hours in a tractor, harvesting their crop. The crop they planted in the spring, prayed all summer that the weather would be favorable, and now they are able to sell their crop to support their families and do it all again next year. With a combine that goes 3 miles per hour, my grandpa said today the miles he puts on each year could get him to Chicago and back a few times (240 miles away).
Please pray for safety in the fields this fall and contunue to support our farmers who do so much to support their families, their community, and the world. The history in agriculture is amazing. Look forward to more stories, but one of my favorites is the house that built me. This house has been re-modeled to fit many generations of my family but the original home turns 100 years old this year. Built in 1914, my great-great grandpa paid $2,700 for the home. My great grandpa was born in the front room and when I graduated, my great aunt Viola toured the renovated home, explaining how it used to be. My grandpa, my dad, and now my sisters and I grew up in this home. I'm blessed and proud of the house that built me, including the story behind it.
Day two of why agriculture is awesome: the College of Agriculture! No other college spends all week celebrating their students, serving lunch everyday for free, hosting a concert, holding fun events for students to participate in, organizing a Hunger Fight (which packaged over 60,264 meals for people in need). The whole week was a huge success thanks to the CALS Council who worked very hard to make it happen. Every one on campus saw the College of Agriculture making a positive impact in student’s lives. I love being part of such an awesome industry.
Next up: the largest agriculture career fair in the nation, held at Iowa State University on October 14, 2014. I have decided on a topic for my blogging challenge, for the next 30 days I'll focus each day on why agriculture is a great industry to be in.
The last week of September means the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences celebrates on Iowa State's campus. Thursday night they sponsored a concert in the new livestock pavilion and David Nail had the honor to perform. Agriculture brings opportunities, including in other industries like music. Thanks to the college of agriculture my friend Maria was also to make a huge debut, opening for David Nail! As a junior at Iowa State, it was so cool to see her share her amazing talent with students and Ames residents. Hopefully some day we will look back and will thank agriculture for helping start Maria Doud on an amazing music career. And even if this isn't the case, thanks to CALS Council and a concert in the livestock pavilion, everyone had great memories and good fun. |
